The family of a critically or terminally ill patient may also stay when they are not with their loved ones. Accommodations for: - Those traveling to Lewiston from outside the immediate area for outpatient treatment who do not require admission as an inpatient before or after surgery, treatment or diagnostic tests.
- Families of patients staying in the hospital who do not live locally.
- Patients undergoing radiation therapy (cancer) treatment and their family members accompanying them.
Carondelet House History The Carondelet House was once a nursing school residence in 1946. When the school closed in 1953 the building became a Sisters' convent. In 1983, the Sisters moved to smaller residences. In January of 1986, the Carondelet House was remodeled and today provides overnight accommodations for outpatients, families, and visitors living at a distance. Radiation Oncology is a medical specialty that uses ionizing radiation for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors. Our Comprehensive Cancer Program includes Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology and Radiation Oncology. The Radiation Oncology Center serves patients from North Central Idaho, Southeast Washington and Northern Oregon. The Radiation Oncology treatment team includes a physician, medical physicist, dosimetrist, and radiation therapists (all board certified in radiation oncology), and an oncology nurse. There are generally 3 treatment methods for cancer: surgery, chemotherapy, and external or internal radiation therapy, all available at SJRMC. Often times a combination of these treatments is used to fight the effects of cancer and the cancer itself. St. Joseph offers both external and internal radiation therapies. External therapy uses a machine called a Linear Accelerator to direct the high energy rays to the cancer and the surrounding diseased tissue. Internal radiation (implants) use radioactive materials with a very short half-life to deliver radiation to the cancer/tumor. Implants may be "needles" placed next to the tumor or "seeds" injected directly into the tumor. Internal radiation involves radioactive seed implants also known as brachytherapy. This technique uses computer mapping and a treatment-planning computer to create an individualized treatment plan for each patient. New to SJRMC in 1999, Prostate Seed Implants are now available through the Radiation Oncology Center. Prostate Seed Implant involves embedding 80-100 low energy I-25 radioactive "seeds" into the prostate. A radiation physicist and dosimetrist use results from an ultrasound study to determine the number and exact placement of the seeds. A Radiation Oncologist inserts preloaded implant needles into the prostate to embed the seeds. A CT scan does verification of the location of the seeds in the prostate. The actual implant procedure is performed in one of the Operating Suites at SJRMC. | | | | | | | | | | | | St. Joseph Regional Medical Center - Main Medical Center 415 6th Street Lewiston,Idaho 83501 208-743-2511 See Map >> | | | |
