Each year, a volunteer who exemplifies the mission and philosophy of the Medical Center is recognized by peers and staff for his or her contributions as a volunteer and Mary Lou Gruber was recently selected for this honor – the 2008 Volunteer of the Year. Mary Lou joined the SJRMC Auxiliary upon retiring as Assistant Controller at LCSC in 2000. Her contributions to the Auxiliary and to our hospital are vast. A typical week for Mary Lou may include a morning shift in ED/Minor Care; a few hours organizing hospital archives; meeting with the hospital’s Philosophy Advisory Committee, tending all the live plants throughout the hospital or working on all of the special projects and fund raising activities of the Auxiliary. She is completing her second year as Auxiliary Board president; prior to that she served as newsletter editor and is an active participant in many of the volunteer leadership events of the Idaho Hospital Association.
Our popular mascot, St. Joe Bernard –aka “Joe,” came to life in 2002 and plays a significant role in our hospital and community. Mary Lou is the spirit behind and within Joe and the one who wears the heavy, hot costume for all the events. Joe appears in parades, at picnics, and makes hospital “rounds” in his spare time, bringing many smiles along the way. And in 2007, Mary Lou gave thought and lives to a book cart/lending library for patients and their families. The attractive cart, known as the W.O.W. cart (Words On Wheels) travels the halls of the hospital stocked with gently used books for patients and guests alike. A resident of Lewiston since 1966, she married to Jack Gruber and has three daughters and a son. A devoted grandma, she has 8 grandchildren and 3 1/2 great grandchildren. Raising her family was a natural spring board to volunteering and she has volunteered in her childrens’ schools, church, Bluebird/CampFire, Cub Scouts, and Lewiston Service League, among many others. She is also a member of Chapter Q PEO. She enjoys yoga, Pilates, swimming, and other types of exercise and counts scrap booking and geocacheing as leisure time hobbies. Mary Lou states that her reason for volunteering is purely selfish: “I don’t get any reward from housework, yard work or cooking…my rewards come from giving of my time elsewhere. “ I like the feeling of being needed. SOMEWHERE!” We need you here and we’re proud to honor you as the 2008 Volunteer of the Year! Please join us at a reception to recognize Mary Lou Gruber as the 2008 Volunteer of the year, 2:00 p.m. – 3:30, Thursday, May 1, 2008, Cafeteria Annex, 2nd floor |
