FOCUSING ON PATIENT SAFETY
At St Joseph’s our plan for providing quality of care to our patients in all areas and at all levels includes a focus on patient safety. We encourage recognition and acknowledgement of risks to our patients and employees and we act on those risks by putting in place processes of care to reduce risk and errors from happening.
In 2008 St Joseph’s was the recipient of a Distinguished Hospital Patient Safety award for overall care provided to our patients. We continue to direct our efforts daily in the pursuit of performing as a high reliability organization while maintaining respect and compassion for each person’s dignity, the diversity of life, and individual preference.
We would especially like to highlight our obstetrics and newborn care provided by our Family Beginnings Department. Two patient safety priorities for action closely followed in Family Beginnings are trauma to our newborns during the birth process and newborn death. Ongoing data monitoring of these two indicators shows 0 occurrences of trauma to our newborns or death since July 2007. During this time we have introduced standardized bundles of care for our patients so that each and every patient receives the same quality of care provided by our physicians and nurses and we are proud of the outcome.
As we proclaim our patient safety focus, you as individuals have the right to report any concern you might have about the safety or quality of care we provide directly to our accrediting agency The Joint Commission. But as we keep our eye on patient safety every day we hope that will never be necessary. As a high reliability organization we want to deliver what we intend to do and that is to Heal Without Harm.
