Child Abuse Prevention

Purple Crying Program

PURPLE Crying® Program

Every person has a role to play in preventing child abuse. In recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, Family Beginnings is encouraging everyone to become more aware, and move involved, in supporting families with young children, and preventing child abuse.

Family Beginnings is focusing on a type of child abuse that is largely unintentional, and preventable, known as “Shaken Baby Syndrome.” Shaken Baby Syndrome results from the violent and forceful shaking of an infant. An astounding 1,400 infants and toddlers die from Shaken Baby Syndrome each year in the United States, making it one of the leading causes of child abuse death.

St. Joseph Regional Medical Center has implemented this program to educate parents, caregivers and society at large that early, prolonged, inconsolable infant crying is a normal part of infant development. The Purple Crying® Program’s goal is to save lives by changing what our culture views as normal, in terms of infant crying, and by helping caregivers learn how to care for their infants and themselves during this normal, though challenging, and developmental stage. All new families at St. Joe’s Family Beginnings will receive education and information, including a brochure and DVD, on what to expect during The Period of Purple Crying, and how to cope.
