Rooney is tabbed as the new Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Michael Rooney, the first oncologist to open a practice in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley in July of 1984, has been named Chief Medical Officer at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Tim Sayler, President/CEO of St. Joseph has announced.
Rooney will begin the newly formed position at St. Joseph on April 1 of this year.
“We are extremely excited to have Mike take over this new role and continue his long relationship with St. Joseph Regional Medical Center,” Sayler said. “Mike is well respected by his peers and we’re thrilled to have him in this role.”
Rooney will continue his part-time medical oncology practice at St. Joseph. He currently fills in when needed.
“I’m excited to take up the new challenge for me personally and also I’m excited to assist the hospital in its forward momentum,” Rooney said.
Rooney is a graduate of the University of Michigan and then earned his medical degree from Indiana University. After completing his residency in Grand Rapids, Mich., in Internal Medicine, he completed his oncology training at Wayne State University in Detroit.
After his training, Rooney moved to the Valley and started his practice that year. He later stated Oncology/Hematology Specialists, located at 428 6th Ave. in Lewiston, in 1989.
After working for 25 years, Rooney decided to retire in January 2009, and taught an anatomy and physiology class at Lewis-Clark State College that spring semester. He also returned to his practice on a part-time basis and filled in when needed.
“This is an opportunity that presented itself and I do have the time,” Rooney said of the new post. “I have a background and a long history with St. Joseph. In fact, ever since I arrived here. It is an opportunity for me to assist the hospital and take on a new challenge.”
Rooney is a former Chief of Staff at St. Joseph and he and his wife, Judy, have served on numerous committees in the area, including being the honorary co-chairs of the 2008-09 Twin County United Way campaign.
