Rehabilitation Services

St. Joseph Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) offers a full line of rehabilitation services, including physical, occupational, and speech and language therapy. These offices are offered at the medical center’s Idaho Street location.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy at SJRMC involves treatment to restore muscular strength, coordination and balance, and improve range of motion. Physical therapy also is used to help reduce pain, inflammation, muscle spasms and joint stiffness. Emphasis is placed on patient education, proper body mechanics and independent exercise programs to maximize effectiveness and prevent recurrence of injury.

Occupational Therapy

The main focus of occupational therapy is to enable the patient to relearn basic motor or cognitive skills needed perform with everyday living tasks. These independent living skills include eating, dressing, cooking, bathing, homemaking and community skills. Occupational Therapy is an essential element of the patient’s recovery process. It enables individuals to increase their independence.

Speech and Language Therapy

SJRMC offers both pediatric and adult speech and language therapy.

The pediatric speech and language therapy services are for children of all ages. St. Joseph conducts comprehensive evaluations, creates individual treatment plans, and provides education and counseling to parents or caregivers. The St. Joseph staff is qualified and trained in the following areas and diagnoses:

  • Speech production and articulation.
  • Oral motor skills.
  • Feeding and swallowing.
  • Stuttering.
  • Voice disorder.
  • Language development and comprehension.
  • Reading.
  • Social/pragmatic language skils.
  • Interaction and play skills.
  • Augmentative and alternative communication methods.
  • Aural rehabilitation for children with hearing impairments or cochlear implants.
  • Autism spectrum disorders, including Asperger’s syndrome.
  • ADHD.
  • Cognitive impairment.
  • CAPD.
  • Down syndrome.
  • Traumatic brain injury.
  • Cerebral palsy.
  • Cleft palate.
  • Developmental delay.
  • Fetal alcohol syndrome disorders.
  • Other syndromes.

Adult speech and language therapy provides both inpatient and outpatient services for adults experiencing communication, cognitive, and/or swallowing impairments. The St. Joseph staff is qualified and trained in the following areas of diagnosis:

  • Speech production.
  • Swallowing impairment/dysphagia.
  • Voice deficits.
  • Stuttering.
  • Cognition and memory.
  • Problem-solving and attention.
  • Reading and writing.
  • Augmentative and alternative communication methods.
  • Motor speech difficulties.
  • Communication deficits resulting from traumatic brain injury, stroke, neurological disease, head and neck cancer, laryngectomy, hearing loss, and dysphagia.
