Employee of the Year
Congratulations, Vickie Mayer!!
Vickie Mayer, a 31-year employee of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, has been selected as the 2011 Employee of the Year in recognition of her contributions in continuing the healing ministry of Jesus.
During many of her earlier years at the hospital, Vickie was devoted to her patients in the Hospice program where she tenderly cared for the terminally ill while living our mission, vision and values. Her kind, caring demeanor, calm reassurance and excellent nursing skills certainly endeared her to her patients and their families. She truly was a gift to many.
Rather than “burning out” from working with patients at a very vulnerable period in their lives, the passion and fire within Vickie enabled her to continue to work with people and assist them through challenging times in their lives. As the nursing educator in Radiation Oncology, the cancer patients have greatly benefited from Vickie’s oncology nursing education and compassionate care. She is attentive to each patient and knows when to involve associates from other departments in assisting them.
Vickie often asks the question: “how can we make things better for our patients?” And, she is always looking for answers to that question which leads her to not only respond in a caring and compassionate manner, but also to keep herself updated with the latest information available about cancer and available treatment options. Vickie makes sure that every patient has an opportunity to respond to a satisfaction survey and takes their comments and suggestions to heart. When patients finish their treatment plan, they often receive a heartwarming hug from Vickie who then invites them to call if they ever have any questions or concerns.
The impact that Vickie has on the lives of our patients and their families is easy to take for granted or overlook. Her desire to respond to the needs of the patients appears to have no limits. And, that desire is put into action every day at the Radiation Oncology Clinic. Vickie is a great team player who views challenges as opportunities. She has a quick smile and is a gift to our patients, our employees and our community as she touches our hearts and our lives with her goodness.
We are proud to honor Vickie as the 2011 Employee of the Year for her commitment to excellent patient care and for being a part of the team of People committed to life.
