St. Joseph Regional Medical Center today announced it has earned three separate Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval® for Disease-Specific Care Certifications for knee and hip replacement and spinal fusion.  The Gold Seal of Approval® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to provide safe and effective patient care.  St. Joseph is the first hospital in the region with these certifications.

“We continue to bring firsts to the region that are shown to improve quality and the first to illustrate through an independent review, a level of care that meets the highest standards available for our community served,” said Blain Claypool, CEO.

Certification is a voluntary process.  St. Joseph underwent a rigorous, onsite, independent evaluation July 24 and 25 to assess compliance with certification standards.  Joint Commission experts evaluate compliance with national disease-specific standards as well as requirements specific to knee and hip replacements and spinal fusions.  Clinical practice guidelines and performance measures were also assessed.

“Pursuing this independent evaluation is important and the right thing to do for our patients.  These phenomenal distinctions demonstrate the quality and patient-centered care that our team and Medical Staff deliver each and every day.  I am so proud of our entire team and all they have accomplished.  These certifications build upon the culture of excellence at St. Joe’s and the wonderful care we provide to our patients”, said Blain Claypool, CEO.

Established in 2002 and awarded for a two-year period, The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification evaluates clinical programs across the continuum of care and addresses three core areas:

  • Compliance with consensus-based national standards
  • Effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care
  • An organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities

St. Joseph Regional Medical Center has thoroughly demonstrated a high level of care for patients undergoing knee and hip replacement and spinal fusion surgery,” said Patrick Phelan, Executive Director, Hospital Business Development, The Joint Commission.  “We commend St. Joseph for becoming a leader in knee, hip and spine care, potentially providing a high standard of service to these patients in its community and region.”
