Hydrocephalus & Cerebrospinal Fluid Disorders

Specialized Care for Complex Neurological Conditions

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) surrounds and cushions the brain and spinal cord. When the flow, pressure or drainage of this fluid is disrupted, it can lead to symptoms that require specialized evaluation and treatment.

St. Joseph Regional Medical Center's neurosurgical services evaluate selected conditions involving cerebrospinal fluid, including hydrocephalus, Chiari malformation and CSF leaks.

Care is tailored to the patient's diagnosis and may involve neurosurgery and other specialties, depending on the condition.

Conditions We Evaluate and Treat

Conditions may include:

  • Congenital hydrocephalus
  • Normal pressure hydrocephalus
  • Aqueductal stenosis
  • Idiopathic intracranial hypertension, also known as pseudotumor cerebri
  • Chiari malformation
  • Cerebrospinal fluid leaks involving the nose, ear or spine
  • Colloid cysts
  • Arachnoid cysts
  • Other causes of obstructed cerebrospinal fluid flow

Diagnostic and Treatment Options

Depending on the condition, evaluation and treatment may include:

  • Neurological assessment and diagnostic imaging
  • Intracranial pressure monitoring
  • Lumbar puncture or lumbar drainage
  • Cerebrospinal fluid shunting
  • Endoscopic third ventriculostomy
  • Endoscopic cyst fenestration or colloid cyst resection
  • Chiari decompression
  • Minimally invasive repair of selected CSF leaks
  • Other procedures based on the patient's diagnosis

Your specialist will explain the recommended approach, expected benefits, potential risks and available alternatives.

A Collaborative Approach to Care

Some cerebrospinal fluid disorders require input from multiple specialties. Depending on the patient's needs, care may involve neurosurgery, neurology, neurointerventional radiology, ear, nose and throat specialists, ophthalmology, radiology and rehabilitation professionals.

Our goal is to help patients understand their condition and navigate an appropriate treatment plan.
